I don't have an answer to your barrel question, but have you still got the old barrell and the new key???

The old barrel is 55 years old, and the new key is new, so can you give the new key a big workover on the wire-wheel on the bench grinder to take all the ridges of the edges to replicate the wear of time....

Or try some other old keys?

Won't be secure as, but will get your motor running/doors open etc.
