DAS Resto Haus...what's been keeping us off the streets...
Work on the lowlight double cab continues with Barry making some great progress with the fabrication and engine installation:

As much as I'd love to have the DC in the weeds, the engine to ground clearance is still an issue with the Porker motor even with the 2 inch tranny raise so the height will come up a fraction from here:
Quick mock up of a 17in Fuch to check for offset measurements etc (different wheels will be run on the DC though)

Tonz, Jase is right, 205/50 17
That rim is a 7in with ET43
The new rear rims will be ET35 and will run a 225/50 17 on the rear and probably 185/45 17 (if I can find them again) with an ET45. New wheels will be a love em or hate em deal, but you have to be different every now and then! We always get people asking us what wheels will fit their car but it all depends on brake and suspension components of course plus ride height and turning circle. The new rims will be 7.5in wide but we'll have the fronts narrowed to 6in to clear the upper wishbone.
Customer wanted an electric ragtop so this Webasto unit was the largest available. Short of going to a splitty samba sunroof this was the best compromise for the owner.
Baz had to spread the DC cheeks apart a little to get engine lid gaps correct
He did sweet talk it first before hand and promised he would be gentle...

All good Jase, just a smidge under $2K including installation - obviously includes the canvas but not headliner (or wiring which I assume we'll run the necessary fused feed and earth up to the control unit). I just googled Webasto sunroofs and then tracked down a local installer. Just a note though, the side to side curve of the sunroof frame is limited so wouldn't work on a splitty or beetle, the bay roof just conforms enough once the hole is cut. Anything with less curve like a squareback etc would have no dramas. That is if you can bear the abuse for cutting a hole in the roofJase wrote:Rude question, PM if you like. We are fortunate to have Phil's beast "Grover" back in our workshop for some more fab work around the engine bay/load beds and then some paint on the underside/treasure chest/engine bay as well.
Dzus fasteners will hold down the hinge rear tray sections:
A bit of tweaking to the hinges and struts (inc lower mounts) got the whole assembly working and aligning perfectly

What was supposed to be a quick tidy up for my niece's first VW turned out to be a complete nightmare with major rust hidden under bog and about 3 months more work than I hoped....but alas her 70 Beetle is done after a full respray inside and out. We were never going for a show car of course, but its a nice tidy little fatty beetle nonetheless.
This is why I no longer do quick resprays and only do bare metal resto's for customers!
