Canberra
Hey gang,
September me and my buddies are planning a road trip to Canberra. We will be spending most of our time at Mt Stromlo for the Worlds MTB Championships.
Dates is Friday 6th til Sunday 7th September.
Thing is none of us have been to Canberra and dont have a clue what the go is up there. I cant even find Mt Stromlo in an Atlas.
Love some feedback.
Cheers James

Wow, i didn't know there was a spaceship at Mt Stromlo, will have to go check it out next time i'm in town!
Directions are what Hertz said, follow the directions to Weston Creek (that's an area of about 10 suburbs
) and you should be able to find it from there.
After you've checked out the spaceship, check out the War Memorial...... if your into mechanical contraptions there are heaps of things to see, although its been a few years since i last went.
As a tourist destination though, the place struggles a bit, not that much to see unless your into art and history in which case the area around New and Old parliament house has some things to see.
As for watering holes, there is a little joint called the wig and pen, 1 street west from Northbourne Avenue (the main drag in town). They brew there own beers and normally have some quality ales on tap. The Tradesman Club is a stones throw from there and will get you suitably inebriated on cheap piss before you stumble into the city and end your night at Mooseheads....... trust me, every tourist should have a night at Mooseheads.
Or you could head out to Fyshwick and Mitchell to the porn shops.......
Disclaimer: Mooseheads was never as good after the fire burnt the joint down

Eaglehawk is actually a fair way out of town on the opposite side of Canberra to Mt Stromlo, a good half an hour drive i reckon. Everything is "close" in Canberra cos there isn't much traffic and the roads are good.....those pollies are good for something. But in distance it is a long way from the city and would be a fair cab ride home from the pubs and clubs.....
Check out the youth hostel in the middle of town, (Akuna street if i remember correctly) and i think there is another one in Ainslie somewhere. The only other caravan park i can think of is in Fyshwick which is again on the wrong side of town.
Depends where you want to be and how your budget stretches i suppose.... but off the top of my head i can't think of any cheap places to stay close to Weston Creek (except maybe the Statesman hotel but that might be a bit dear).
Good luck with it.

As some other people have said, Eaglehawk's a bit far away from everything, the city's only about a 15 min drive from Stromlo. Plenty of places to stay around town, not a lot of budget options though. Here's a link to the hostel in the city: http://www.yha.com.au/hostels/details.cfm?HostelID=240 there's a good bar underneath that has lots of great free music on thursday, friday and saturday nights too. Stay away from Mooseheads

The War Memorial is really worth a look if you're not into pubs and clubs etc, some cool old planes and tanks there to check out and it's free.
If you want anymore info, let me know.
cheers, Scotty
