Sorry just saw this. Finally got the bloody thing off. Lots and lots of hammering using the flat plate socket then finished it off with the socket/breaker bar

The torque meister tool is one of the best tools you can buy if you mess about with early VW's...
getting drums off a trans that have been pulled without cracking the hub nuts
flywheels off short blocks for the same reason!!

and basically undoing both of the above without having to use a 3ft length of pipe, and breaking you and all your friends large 1/2" drive 36mm sockets!!!
As above if using sockets, an impact strength 3/4 is the only way to go. I think for my 36mm and 46mm it was about $100, but those will never break!
you guys should buy some communal torque meisters.
