Sorry man, bu this quote really sounds dumb. They are Rare as rockin horse shit, but your gonna wait for the right car? I don't think there is anything wrong with waiting for the right car in the right condition. When that happens i'll buy in a flash.
My main concern is rust and parts. If i can find a relatively rust free 50's or 60's KCB (everything within reason considering its a 60 yo car), i'll jump in a flash.
They're rare as hens teeth as it is, so its going to take some time to find what i want. Until then, im quite happy to search the web til the right car comes up.

now, not knowing if your bug is a factory convertible or a "chop top" vert (please dont take any offence to my description, I've personally owned/built/daily driven a couple of the chop tops when I was younger & loved them both)
anyway- a reputable upolsterer can make you a nice new top for a 'chop top', & if you have an old one for a pattern its extremely helpful, so it will fit nicely with your exisiting bars. so be sure to retain all the pieces no matter how tatty there are.
you used to able to get the normal vinyl or mercedes cloth (that really looked great).
try a few places & get quotes, I re-call going to an auto marine uplosterer for parts (clips etc) for mine that needed fixings. we are talking early 90's though.
if she's a real bug vert, I'm fairly certain that you can buy repro tops for factory cars, as stated when I was looking at Gerorges' vert he was supplying a repro/new top with it though his shop.

Dont be afraid of importing one, but add a holiday to the deal, and check out in person. Pomona swap always has some good, desently priced vert for sale. Or Take a risk, with a "bargain" and then get it restored right.
Heater channels on verts have inner reinforcments, and so does under the back seat, which if rusted out, will be very involved to get repaired

It so happens that I found a closed vehicle auction that had a bunch of imported KCB's in Australia. Why would it be so unreasonable to consider that one of those cars is up for sale somewhere?
Also, why would it be so unreasonable to consider the possibility that somebody privately shipped something over in the last 40-50 years? As unlikely as it may seem, somebody at one stage or another probably did?
Funnily enough, with all the searching I found an original RHD 1954 KCB on 1956 pan in UK. It was snatched up before i got a response on my enquiry... it is however possible to find "the right" car.
